SuperMIG® - Hybrid Welding Technology Combining Plasma and GMAW in One Torch
This following single-pass weld was made using our hybrid plasma-GMAW process (SuperMIG®), in a single-bevel/tee-joint configuration (30° bevel w/4mm root face), in the 1G position, with zero root opening and at a travel speed of 20 in/min (508 mm/min). As per customer requirement, a minimum effective throat of 10mm was achieved (measured 12.5mm) with approximately 1.5mm of penetration beyond the root. This scenario utilized 80/20 (Argon/CO2) shielding gas and 0.052” ER70S-6 wire in a spray transfer (CV)
Single bevel joints are commonly seen in the manufacturing of rail cars chassis, excavator and loaders arms, crane booms (4 plates design). Depending on the thickness, a small bevel is recommended, requiring 2 or 3 passes with conventional welding processes. SuperMIG® allows for the performance of such welds in a single pass up to 15 mm (5/8").
