SuperMIG® - Hybrid Welding Technology Combining Plasma and GMAW in One Torch
This single-pass weld was made using our hybrid plasma-GMAW process (SuperMIG®), in a square-groove/corner joint configuration (zero beveling), in the 1G position, with a root opening of 3 mm and at a travel speed of 18 in/min (457 mm/min). This scenario utilized 90/10 (Argon/CO2) shielding gas and 1/16” E70C-6M H4 metal-cored wire in a spray transfer (CV) using steel backing.
Corner joints are typically used in trucks and cranes outriggers although the design can also be used in other structures. Normally using a single bevel with the performance of 2 or 3 passes with conventional processes, SuperMIG® allows for the performance of a single pass, with no bevel, up to a thickness of 12 mm (1/2") in the thinner plate.
